Despite yesterday’s Bank of England’s mortgage lending statistics for July showing a marginal rise in both the value and volume of mortgages approved, the bigger picture is still of subdued activity in the housing market.

LONDON (SHARECAST) - Mortgage lending by the major UK banks dipped in June, showing that housing market activity remained subdued. The number of mortgages approved for people buying a home fell to 34,813 from 36,418 in May, according to the latest data from the British Bankers’ Association.

(RTTNews) - Mortgage lending in Spain dropped 33.9% year-on-year to 6.77 billion euros in July, the National Statistics Institute said Monday. In July, the average value of mortgages approved during the month dropped 14.4% annually, and was down 6.2% on a monthly basis.
